Review of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2001) by Richard T — 05 Jul 2009

I said that this film was exactly like the show after I was about fifteen minutes in, and now that I have finished the film I can say that it basically is exactly like the show. Now the film came first, so that means that the show is like the film, but it really does not matter all that much as, for the intent of this review, the only comparisons I shall be making are rather general. Basically it's pretty simple for anyone who has seen the show, if you found enjoyment there then you will likely find enjoyment here. As for me, I occasionally found charm in the Jimmy Neutron series and usually a fair bit of the humor hit, but this was also mixed in with a number of pretty irritating moments. Usually the good outweighs the bad, which is clearly the case in the film as well. What separates Jimmy Neutron from other types of films geared at the same audience is, it seems mighty apparent, the ability to write dialogue. The writing in the film is pretty fantastic, all of the characters are given special attention to how they sound and what they are saying, which results in a plethora of great one liners from Carl, Hugh, Sean, Cindy, Jimmy, and really most of the characters. I suppose each character has at least one great line. The film really succeeds as a comedy, let along a comedy geared toward younger audiences. The plot is kind of simple, but that is not a huge problem because the film does not seem to be too concerned with anything besides having a good time and telling some jokes. Sure that doesn't make for a revolutionary film, but it's entertaining and it does what it wants to really well. It has a fair amount of juvenile humor in the film, but the film has a ton of really great comedy. I was also pretty surprised at the soundtrack. It had everything from N*Sync to Lil Romeo to The Ramones. Really odd.
