Review of Jigsaw (2017) by Will K — 27 Oct 2017
Coming from someone who is a die-hard "Saw" fan and also in the small group of people who actually enjoyed the majority of sequels, "Jigsaw" is sadly another major disappointment for the true fans.
This franchise ultimately changed the game for the modern Horror genre and censorship, in general. Back seven years ago, they almost killed the franchise with its lowest low which was "The Final Chapter" (In part, I blame the choice to obnoxiously film it in 3D).
The story of that film was so poorly put together that led to a twist you could've honestly guessed back during "Saw 2". Overall, these films are extremely well crafted and clever; more so than most Horror films.
As for "Jigsaw", the gore that these films thrived on is nearly none existent. To be honest, with a couple cuts this could've been PG13. By no means does gorier necessarily mean better but it's what this series is based on and the newest film is as soft and weak as they come.
The traps aren't original like in any of the first seven films and the twist is completely unnecessary to the storyline. "Jigsaw" adds another element to the already bloated story of the killer and makes everything just that more confusing for passive fans.
I'm not saying that "Jigsaw" is the worst film of the year but it is nothing like the other films. It feels completely out of place like a cheap knock off, there is zero originality in the script, the twist is obviously thrown together and those expecting to wince at the screen like years past should beware.
It's like an extended episode of CSI that should not have taken SEVEN years to produce!
