Review of JFK (1991) by Darren M — 30 Aug 2008
You have to brace yourself. This is not for the faint hearted "I will never open my eyes to a possible federal conspiracy" type. It is questioning throughout; the power of the CIA, FBI, Government administration makes your blood boil, and your soul shiver. Its intricate, but wonderfully so - because JKF's assassination was never as simple as the government made it out to be. Still to this day, uncertainty prevails, but you can bet your bottom dollar that this came close. Kennedy's willingness to not invade Cuba, and to pull troops from Vietnam caused political tidal waves - the government depends on war as a business and a Commander in Chief threatening to rock the boat, floated by the dollar and kept ship shape by the military wasn't going to be popular.
JFK WAS Julius Ceasar - in many respects. Shakespeare knew. Here Stone knew.
The message was perfectly summarized at the end - in Costner's closing statement in his bid to open up the Grand Jury to convict Shaw. The declaration of independence, and the message of Congress: for the people, by the people.
Kennedy was for the people. Sadly perhaps, the 'people' will never know quite what happened to him in every sense. His autopsy, his bullet wounds, his agenda. A secret.
It makes you wonder - how long will America continue to treat its citizens as children? Well as long as the balance of power remains, who knows.
