Review of JFK (1991) by Josh I — 07 Jan 2010
"JFK" is an excellent piece of fiction. Kevin Costner does a fantastic job portraying Jim Garrison, the New Orleans DA who is convinced that there is a massive conspiracy behind President Kennedy's assassination, and that he has all the answers to it. Oliver Stone captures perfectly within this film the grief experienced by the American public following the assassination and the subsequent distrust of the US government following the Warren Commission's report. To this day, many Americans believe there was indeed a conspiracy to kill Kennedy. This film inspires feelings of patriotism and a yearning to fully understand what happened in Dallas on that November day in 1963.
"JFK" is an excellent piece of fiction. So excellent, in fact, that it has essentially brainwashed a great number of viewers into believing everything in this movie is true. Actually, Oliver Stone took many liberties with this "true" story, and did not keep the facts straight. Stone made things up as he went along, in order to make Garrison seem like the hero who solved the conspiracy "mystery." Anyone watching this movie would think Clay Shaw and the CIA were, without doubt, behind the Kennedy assassination. Oliver Stone has made an innocent man guilty in the minds of thousands of Americans who will believe any bullshit they happen to see on the silver screen. Yes, this could have been a classic movie, but Oliver Stone took history and distorted it in order to make a movie that would entertain rather than inform. This movie is nothing but conspiracy propaganda on a Hollywood budget.
