Found it rang true when seen as a story of a family torn apart by the 60s and reconstituting itself around a modern kid who's very bright. Since raw intelligence is increasing generation by generation, the genius kid fits my interpretation to a T.
The closing song and credit music by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros fits my interpretation also: "Home". Since that era is also full of my own history, of course I projected my own stuff into the movie.
And I liked the movie very much. It's zaniness is necessary to the theme.
