Review of Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert (2018) by Duncan P — 02 Apr 2018
A pretty good version (if not my favourite of the ones I've seen - that'd still be the one from 2000) of the anachronistic, anarchic and controversial musical; and impressive that they managed to stage this all live, considering it's a pretty complicated musical to begin with (some of those parts are really difficult).
It's said that a text, written in a different era, would mean something entirely different sociopolitically, and a lot about this particular version (such as Jesus not being white), and the timing, made me feel this had a sociopolitical edge against the modern American right that claims to be Christian, while also acting against the morals they claim to have (though lighter than other versions). To be fair, that's pretty much always been the case with JCS (think the 1973 film, with hippies and overt anti-war sentiments), so I don't think I'm reading too much into the subtext, but it's interesting to compare to older versions and see how they react to the political situation.
