Review of Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) by Charity K — 16 Mar 2008
As it is Palm Sunday, this is an essential? Have you ever seen a more wishful Jesus bedecked with a crown of thorns. Someday I'll get a bigger TV with the strength to pull out the full of the Basso Profundo from Caiaphas.
Knowing the sad history of the "Passion Play", one feels a bit icky about singingalong to Mel Gibson's Aramaic Torture Porn Spectacular, though this one is certainly more the cerebral lefty martyr myth, multicultural, no real villains (as said, you cheer for the Pharasees because they get great songs), humanizing and revisioning the King James script.
This musical lasts in your head for about 48 hours afterwards, which is perhaps the most important effect you could want from one. What's the buzz, man?
