Review of Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) by Eric H — 03 Dec 2008
Okay, when even Andrew Lloyd Webber hates this movie, you know it's bad. This is camp through and through - there is no serious emotion or unique inflection on any of the songs. Everything's literal in its translation from LP to film, and frankly, I'd rather stick with the LP if this is the route they take.
I can't say enough about how much I despise Ted Neeley as Jesus. He's arrogant and a horrendous actor. Carl Anderson has a pretty good voice - you just have to close your eyes, because his acting is overdone.
(His "WTF?" face during "Simon Zealotes" is priceless, however.) Don't even get me started on "King Herod's Song," Pontius Pilate, Caiaphas, or the "Superstar" scene.
Ugh ugh ugh. Stick to the 2000 version or, better yet, a stage production.
