Review of Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) by Calvin C — 02 May 2011
Norman Jewison is a fantastic director, but here, he seemed a little off. There are some nice visuals, but a movie that is ALL song will be hard for people who are used to breaks in between. Some songs are hit and miss and the decade it was made shows how trippy and hippie it is. Ted Neeley was okay as Jesus. His voice sounded odd to me. Carl Anderson who plays Judus is the big stand out. The movie and music doesn't get going until the final third. I know religious films get a lot of slack for its content but take it for what it is...a rock opera set in the time of Jesus! Rock on!
Grade: B-.
