Review of Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) by Anssi V — 10 Oct 2011
Holy shit... Pun intended. Seriously though, I'm not a huge fan of biblical stories, but this movie pretty much blew my mind. Or at least parts of it did. The whole way of telling the story through songs and nothing else works well in this movie, and it doesn't hurt that most of the songs are extremely good.
Of course there are some weaker examples (King Herod's Song and The Last Supper come to mind), but the strongest examples easily make up for them. Especially the first song Overture is simply said amazing.
Well, truth be told, anything by Carl Anderson in this movie is amazing. But, I have to admit that the movie has some flaws as well. For example, Ted Neeley's voice isn't very strong or charismatic, which doesn't really work seeing that he plays Jesus.
Well okay, one of the ideas of the movie is that Jesus isn't as charismatic as you have been led to believe, but the dude is still Jesus Christ... he needs at least a little bit of charisma. Plus, towards the end of the movie the pacing starts to drag a little bit.
Not much, but enough to be noticeable. All in all, though, a great musical, one of the best I've ever seen.
