Review of Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) by Gregory M — 02 Apr 2018
I don't have the words to express what I've experienced just yet! As far as movie musical go, I feel like this one is the best so far. It all is because of the cast, the actors gave their absolute best.
Carl Anderson shines through this, as do Ted Neeley and Yvonne Elliman. The entire movie is set on location which gave the film a sense of originality and authenticity. I feel the director, Norman Jewison, combined the modern with the classic very well, and though the story is the very well known story, the music and songs manage to highlight the message behind it all.
The songs have power and they have meaning and depth and they sink in immediately. I can't fully comprehend why this musical came to be, I really can't see how they even thought of it, but I'm glad it does.
The movie's take on the musical is really fitting and now I'm intrigued to watch it unfold as a stage play. I bet the atmosphere would differ.
