Review of Jesus Camp (2006) by Cheryl S — 18 Jan 2009
Wow. One thinks this sort of blatent brainwashing of children only happens in the movies but apparently it happens regularly in America's evangelical churchs. Holy crap! Front row seat with lots of footage where the viewer has a chance to witness exactly what goes on with a particular evangelical leader named Becky Fischer.
The truely frightening thing about it is that Becky wholeheartedly believes that her approach to God/Christ is the "right one." She deeply believes that American children should be indoctrinated (read brainwashed) into her version of evangelicalism "just like the muslims do to their children.
" She thinks it entirely appropriate for the kids to be posturing aggressively sporting war paint as they chant about being part of Christ's "army." Okay, what happened to the teachings of Jesus regarding peace, love, and tolerance for your neighbour? Donning war paint, speaking about armies and fighting, and brainwashing your children seems about as far as you can get from the teachings of Jesus as you can get! Throughout the movie, radio broadcaster Mike Papantonio provides an alternate Christian viewpoint to Becky's radical evangelical approach.
