Review of Jesus Camp (2006) by Duncan P — 23 Jun 2010
"I think democracy is the greatest political system on Earth, but that's just on Earth. It's ultimately designed to destroy itself because we have to give everyone equal freedom, and ultimately, that's going to destroy us.".
Perhaps somewhat out of date (being from 2006), but never-the-less, a telling and oft disturbing look into how the Evangelical extreme-right of America indoctrinate their children to fight for God in some over-exaggerated jihad. Juxtaposing odd behaviors with fanatical chanting (for example, the children being made to smash mugs with the word "GOVERNMENT" on them, while all others in the background cry and yell), the film may be seen as "biased", but I beg to differ: the only people to blame for their behavior are themselves.
Also provides interesting insight to some of the major fallacies of logic in their beliefs, such as the children being taught right at the beginning that "science doesn't prove anything", then later being persuaded against abortion by using models of fetuses (which needed science in order to determine); as well as the arrogance of the people involved ("We think we're the most important religion", "if the Evangelicals vote, they determine the election", "this is just the tip of the iceberg", etc.).
Only one statement made by Becky I can agree with: "Extreme liberals have to look at this and start shaking in their boots.". Not because this is something they think that they have destroyed liberalism with, but because of the potential impact it'll have for anyone who gets in their way (myself especially, as a strongly outspoken Atheist). I am not afraid of them as she wants me to be, but I don't believe their militant hate for anyone they see as being against them could potentially lead to the devastation of the species as a whole due to never-ending war.
