Review of Jesus Camp (2006) by Erica W — 06 Mar 2011
It's weird.
This documentary pretty much proves that eerily prophetic statement spoken by the enigmatic character of Hal Phillip Walker from "Nashville": "All of us are involved in politics, whether or not we notice it.".
While at times funny, the documentary takes a more disturbing look at how a certain group of Americans (according to this, the conservative evangelical Christians) are taking away the freedom of choice and equal opportunities in America simply because they interpret the Bible as like that. They believe in the same "Do not trust the world" stance that the Westboro Baptist Church has oh-so infamously believed, but rather than taking it to the extreme of practically hating everything in plain sight, Becky Fischer's group of kids conform to a not-so-bright future of trying to limit the choices of Americans (and thus limiting their own minds to what they think is right).
This documentary has an obnoxiously liberal feel to it. Mike Papantonio, a Liberal Christian, speaks out against Becky and her Conservative crusade of "no abortions and Harry Potter and soul-sucking pop music," but he does it in such a manner that it gets really repetitive after a while. Nothing new's being said - it's what I learned when I was a senior in high school. I'm glad we can see this, but much like with the Jessica Beagley controversy, people are blowing it out of proportion. Sure, indoctrinating from a young age and scaring your child into being spineless with the Scoville Scale are not good at all, but they're not the next Holocaust. In the end, it'll be the liberal-minded and the Moderates who win. I'm not saying this because it'll "appease the people" - I'm saying this because it simply is a fact. Conservative movements only work when dictators take over.
And simply put: Obama is not a dictator. He is simply a forgettable Hal Phillip Walker figure. He promises so many off-the-wall things, but he simply conforms when something goes wrong.
