Review of Jersey Boys (2014) by Donovan M — 23 Jun 2014
The movie #JerseyBoys, based on the stage play by the same name is not the same experience. It may be unfair to compare the movie to the play but the movie about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons lacks something.
All of the elements are there, the music, the drama, the banter, and breaking of the fourth wall by all of the four seasons except for Valli. I like this approach better than the omnipresent narration that you get with most movies but even with the characters looking right at me I somehow felt disconnected.
The play, on the other hand, was one of the best experiences I've had watching the stage. It was fun and energetic, upbeat and funny. Clearly an extra-large bucket of popcorn compared to the movie's medium.
Maybe my bias and disappointment is more warning to the wise than it is a worthy review. If you have seen the play don't bother and catch it at home on cable. You're sure to notice that the acting is a little over played at times and the experience as a whole is lacking audience feedback.
If you haven't seen it on stage, it is worthy of matinee prices and a fair way to spend two hours. Just make sure that when it is back on stage at a theater near you, you do whatever it takes to go.
It is that good.
