Review of Jersey Boys (2014) by Matt H — 02 Dec 2014
Typical music biopic and a weak musical, Jersey Boys is just anemic out the gate. The main problem is that the main characters are all really unlikable, and for this type of film that is a fatal flaw the movie can't recover from.
Plus those Jersey accents, sheesh. They're so thick you'd almost think it was a SNL skit. The main character of Frankie Valli is either underwritten or the actor just doesn't have "it" to keep the audience compelled enough by his performance.
The guy who plays Lucky Luciano in Boardwalk Empire does a decent job, although it's pretty much the same performance as on that show, but there isn't enough either on screen or on the page to keep his character compelling, either.
Definitely Eastwood's weakest film in some time (haven't seen "Hereafter").
