Review of Jersey Boys (2014) by Ray H — 01 Jul 2014
The movie seems largely lifted off the stage and placed in front of the camera. Much of the acting is out-sized and melodramatic. It looks very much like the stage play from which it was adapted. That was distracting. If you can convince yourself you are watching a stage play; it will be more tolerable. Also, there are regular addresses to the audience. I think that technique fits a play or a film comedy to better effect.
The film clicks rite along. And, there is plenty of very good music. The music is the main character. We learn these Italian Jersey Boys have mob connections. Some are benign, even helpful. Others are definitely menacing. There are plenty of references to the theft/mob lifestyle. There is very little violence or sex.
The acting is pretty good. Neighborhood mobster, Gyp (Chris Walken) has a few brief scenes. Its a pleasure to watch Walken work his magic. There is a full cast street dance and sing fest, ala Bollywood or SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, under the closing credits. That scene was fun.
If you can get past the stage play look and feel; the music is a good enough reason to check out the movie.
It was an OK trip to the flics.
