Review of Jersey Boys (2014) by Amanda C — 15 Dec 2014
It's always difficult to adapt a stage show for the screen, even more so when the show in question is extremely unsuited to the screen. And this is the major fault of Jersey Boys. There is an attempt to expand on the stage play and director Clint Eastwood doesn't get it.
What made the stage show so great was that is was about the music, becaue the back story of The Four Seasons isn't that original or quite frankly that interesting. Their music, however is. Unfortunately Eastwood's film gets bogged down in the everyday drama of the group and the music gets shoved to the periphery.
This results in a film that is overly bloated and poorly structured. It redeems itself slightly during the closing credits, but when a film takes its entire runtime to find its footing, clearly something isn't working.
