Review of Jerry Maguire (1996) by Rocknblues 8 — 20 Dec 2009

It's very rare for me to sit my backside down and be able to find the strength within myself to sit through a rom-com. However, Jerry Mcguire is different. It was one of the only rom-coms I was attracted to myself and not just one of those you go along with just to pull some bird (Monster-in-Law etc. etc.), but then it so much more than that. Again, I don't do plot summaries, because I'm lazy and you get them by clicking on the film thumbnail. I just like to say how films made me feel. I realised that I hadn't done a little review for one of my favourite films, so in short, here it is. It's messy as per. So what? Get over it Robert Ebert.

Jerry Mcguire, in my opinion, offers the viewer everything. It's entertaining, the characters make you care for them (yes, that even includes Tom Cruise) and the story is well-rounded. It very much feels like a Cameron Crowe movie, much like Singles or Almost Famous, but this offers more than those. I just feel very emotionally attached to this film every time I watch it, mainly due to the characters and the journey they take through the film. It was Crowe's first and, maybe Vaniila Sky aside, only perfect movie. Cruise shows why he was one of the biggest movie stars of all-time before he went all wacko (cheers Scientology!), Cuba Gooding Jr. gives a superb performance. Anyone who says that he just plays a typical OTT black man must not watch Monday Night Football or read the papers about the characters of the NFL - they are OTT! Zelleweger is good in her breakthrough role. I liked her a lot. Special kudos to Jay Mohr as Bob Sugar. He will make you want to punch him in the face, which is exactly the reaction that he's supposed to bring out in you.

All in all, a great film and one of my favourites. It surprised me. Give it a chance to surprise you too. "SHOW ME THE MONEY"!
