Review of Jerry Maguire (1996) by Brian S — 02 Oct 2011
This is a funny, solidly entertaining movie except for one glaring flaw: it's about as contrived and emotionally manipulative as Hollywood can get. the writing is very good--decent characters, clever dialogue, and an engaging story.
the acting is passable, although this is definitely one of Cuba Gooding Jr's better roles. underlying all the positives, though, is the unshakable feeling that nothing is genuine. the dramatic "perspective on life" change; the corny dysfunctional love story; the sweet-as-sugar kid; the bitter, gossipy women's group; the periodic inspirational statements from the mentor.
it's all pulling you along until the "you had me at hello" garbage when you're supposed to feel all gooey inside and reach for your kleenex. I honestly like and enjoy watching this movie, but I hate it at the same time.
