Review of Jerry Maguire (1996) by Ken C — 03 Jan 2013
I may need to see this again, but as of right now I thought the movie was charming and entertaining, but not without some drawbacks.
Cruise's performance I thought lacked in profoundness, and I think if this were real life people would think of his character as a narcissistic jerk. Of course there are those notorious cheesy dialogue bits which were probably cute back in '96 but are extraordinarily cringe-worthy today. I also didn't really buy Cruise and Zelwegger as a couple, their relationship seemed kind of awkward to me and not all that real.
Still, the movie was indeed charming and quotable and not boring or painful to watch (with the exception of maybe a few scenes). I though Zelwegger did a wonderful job, and made some of the corny lines more believable.
I say it's good for nostalgia value (if you saw and loved the movie back when it first came out), Tom Cruise fans, and those looking for kind of a mushy/charming love story. I say give it a watch.
