Review of Jerry Maguire (1996) by Gavin M — 05 Mar 2015
Well hello boys and girls. "Jerry Maguire" is without a doubt one of the best movies of all time and definitely one of the best movies of the 1990's. Tom Cruise. Tom Fucking Cruise delivers his most iconic role of all time.
The man truly is a great actor. After stepping aside from his movies recently as I feared his Scientology was getting in the way of his status as an A+ actor that I will admit, I lost interest in him.
And yes it was because of his Scientology views and I did fear he was getting way out of hand with it and getting full of himself after a while of trying not let his personal life interfere with my movie going experiences, but it gets to the point where enough is enough.
But, that does not in any way mean that he is still not a great actor, because he is I mean for fuck sake he's Tom Cruise! The man has made without a doubt some of the best movies ever memorable. "Top Gun," the movie that made him a superstar.
"Born on the Fourth of July," which I still say is his best performance of all time as Ron Kovic the paralyzed Vietnam Veteran who goes on strike with other vets because he believes the government does not give a shit about the American troops in Vietnam and I agree.
It also for me established Tom Cruise as a VERY serious actor not just the handsome devil he is. "Collateral," "Magnolia," another terrific performance by him. The list goes on and on, but I will say Tom Cruise in "Jerry Maguire" is his most memorable and most iconic role.
It's the movie besides "Top Gun" most people associate him with. He's a true legend. I can go on and on about Tom Cruise as this movie reminds me why at one point Tom Cruise was one of my favorite actors to go see on the big screen before his personal life really took a blow for the worst I'm afraid, but you never know.
If Mickey Rourke can get a comeback for "The Wrestler" any actor in Hollywood can come back. Time will tell. But "Jerry Maguire" is a movie for the ages as I truly believe it has so many valuable life lessons in it that it's hard to imagine that nobody could connect to the character as much as I did in this movie.
Life is hard. That's what I got from this movie and that we all fuck up in life and we will continue to make mistakes...it's all apart of life....it's also how we learn. I feel Tom Cruise really should have won the Academy Award for this movie even though I didn't see Geoffrey Rush in "Shine" even though I'm sure he is terrific in it as he always is with anything he does, but I feel Tom Cruise was snubbed on this one.
This should have been the movie where he won his Oscar because he's just so damn good in it. Remarkable, just remarkable on all accounts. But let's also not forget Cuba Gooding Jr. who won Best Supporting Actor as Tom Cruise's client for the Arizona Cardinals Rod Tidwell, who bring great comic relief to the movie especially the show me the money scene which one of the best scenes ever filmed in my opinion and definitely one of the best scenes in movie history.
Rene Zellweger bring great chemistry to Tom Cruise as his love interest and secretary that he falls in love with and goes with him to start his own agency with Cuba Gooding Jr. as his only client. The kid in this movie too played by Johnathan Lipnicki is remarkable as well as you literally just want to hug the shit out of and spend all your free time with in this movie and should have got an Oscar nomination too just because he is that damn good as well.
This whole movie is tour de force and I have never used that phrase in any of my reviews and I know many critics do when a great movie like "Million Dollar Baby" or "American Sniper" both directed the great and legendary Clint Eastwood, but Jerry Maguire is definitely, most DEFINITELY one of the best movies I have ever seen.
Oh yea, before I go, the Bob Dylan song "Shelter From the Storm" that plays at the end of the movie was such a great choice to close off the movie as I too feel Bob Dylan is the greatest artist that has ever lived and that is because he's different, he sings his own tune, he's a poet with a guitar and I couldn't think of a better song to end this remarkable film.
Thumbs up to director Cameron Crowe who really is a true and shows great potential as a filmmaker.
