Review of Jerry Maguire (1996) by Kay O — 06 Jan 2011
"You see this jacket I'm wearing, you like it? Because I don't really need it, because I'm cloaked in failure!".
After years of successfully navigating the shark-infested waters of sports management, Jerry Maguire experiences a crisis of conscience and leaves his high-powered job behind.
If it weren't for the outrageously good performances from the film's cast, the best part about the film would be the script. Some of the dialogue has no choice but to explode into pop culture. The script handles its subject very well, it makes sports interesting for people who do not like sports, and it manages to make romance funny and warm, instead of sappy and annoying. In other words, it will appeal to both women and men in the audience.
Add in the previously mentioned outstanding performance from the film's ensemble cast, and direction that never loses focus of what makes the film work, and you have a thoroughly enjoyable romance comedy.
