Review of Jerry Maguire (1996) by Rhys E — 23 Mar 2012
It maybe a "sports" movie, but the story here is not as much about the sport itself but those who surround it. Superbly written and directed by Cameron Crowe, the film's strong characters are matched only by the emotion that they bring up.
Cruise is excellent as the eponymous sports agent but Cuba Gooding Jr. as the wide receiver Rod Tidwell steals the show for me. Knowing about American football is not essential for this film (which doesn't make it a "sports" movie in my mind), but it certainly gives those who do a kick out of it.
It didn't get those Oscar nominations for nothing.
