Review of Jerry Maguire (1996) by Brian C — 12 Mar 2013
Nobody does "feel-good" cinema like Cameron Crowe. His sentimental films work because they're self-aware about their cheesiness, and rather than hold back on the tugging of the heartstrings, they shamelessly revel in it.
At the same time, they don't feel as paint-by-numbers as so many films going for the same effect have, and find the emotion where it counts. Jerry Maguire is a perfect example. It's funny, cool, adorable, sappy, wrenching, emotional, romantic, and downright impossible to resist.
I can be cynical about movies that see the world through rose-colored lenses, but movies like Jerry Maguire make me believe that the world actually can look that way if you look in the right places.
