Review of Jennifer's Body (2009) by Jesse P — 16 Jan 2012
Rating: F, I was trying to figure out a movie I didn't like in recent times so I could have something to even out all my good reviews. None stuck in my head more than Jennifer's body. And it's not because of the acting, it's not because of the dialogue (even though these points aren't done extremely well either).
No, what I really hate about this movie is its plot. So the whole movie revolves around a dead/possessed Jennifer (played by Megan Fox) who has developed a taste for human flesh. The only thing that stands in her way is her best friend Needy (played by Amanda Seyfried).
Now what bugs me the most in this movie is how Jennifer becomes a demon. She is taken by a rock band into the forrest under the impression that she is a virgin and sacrifice her to the devil so their band will have the luck they need to get their big break.
Where do I begin? 1. WHAT!!!??? What kind of reasoning is that? If you want to make it in the industry, try harder. I know it's tough, but really the devil? 2. WHY HER!!!??? I know their reasoning was we need a female virgin for the sacrifice, but was that really what you saw? Needy later comments that Jennifer hadn't been one since middle school, and while they might have not known that, it was pretty obvious.
Your telling me you'd take one look at Fox and go, yeah, she's to ugly to have never got that far. Heck, I assumed she wasn't one just by looking at her. These band members are idiots!! 3.
IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???? Ok, I could admit it was a stupid idea, BUT IT WORKED!!!! While I guess there is an underlining to this, it doesn't escape the fact that for as long as they lived, it worked.
Oh my god, I wanted to punch the screen. 4. No one seems to ever give a second thought about it. They take Jennifer during a bar fire and through-out the whole movie they're hailed as heros for helping save people at the bar.
The only one who knows this isn't true is Needy, who was there. Yet no one believes her and they all claimed they helped, when they didn't. SO WHY TO PEOPLE THINK THEY DO IF THEY WEREN'T ACTUALLY THERE!!!!!! They make a good "wikipedia says" joke to explain it, but if they didn't help, then who said they did? I can't focus on any other aspect of the movie because this bothers me to much.
Let's not forget to mention what's wrong with the rest of the story. No one else besides Needy seems to notice that Jennifer is possessed or something isn't right. She invites a boy to an abandoned house and he only questions it when he finally sees her.
The whole town is stupid. Oh, and there's this running plot point about a hole in the river where no one, not even scientists can figure out where it leads. And while walking on the side of a street, Needy just happens to find it.
On the side of a street nearby, where no one thought to look. God I hate this town that was made. All the points just don't add up to a good story, in fact, it's the only really truly bad thing about the movie.
The acting isn't that bad, it's just not that great. The film does have some funny moments and that can make the story even bearable at times. There are some good demonic scenes like when we see Jennifer come back from the satanic ritual and she's coughing up some demonic black goop, I don't know what it is, but it looks good.
Sadly, the film can't even begin to hold up from it's poor plot. Not even an ok acting Megan Fox and the film's good dark humor can save it. I would give it a D or maybe even a C if the plot didn't bug me much, but it does.
I don't recommend it.
