Review of Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2012) by Maksim B — 29 Dec 2012
Relatively sweet and slightly touching, Jeff Who Lives at Home is a lazy, slow paced comedy with elements of drama and bittersweet humor. While being a relatively more mainstream delivery of the Duplass brothers, it suffers from being almost boring and somehow incomplete movie.
Without much of a story (or focused story development), Jeff Who Lives at Home is that kind of soft dramedy which has some engaging moments, but fails to really attract. The audience is thrown amidst a dysfunctional family, where two brothers near their thirties and their mother struggle with the issues of their lives. Nothing really happens in this movie and the only spark of coolness is the sweet and charming cast. Jason Segel, Ed Helms and Susan Sarandon are emotional, frustrated, vulnerable and very strange. They are the only thing that makes this delivery something more than boring and simple sitcom with no actual content.
Despite the overall hype surrounding this movie (probably due to the cult status of the Duplass brothers), there is little that could impress here. Jeff Who Lives At Home is a heart-warming platform for the performances of Segel, Helms and Sarandon, but it remains completely unfocused, uninteresting and almost boring.
