Review of Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2012) by Peter C — 04 Jul 2013
Jeff, Who Lives At Home: a quiet, quirky, life-affirming film about the search for love and meaning.
Given the title and trailer, I thought it was going to be a typical, run-of-the-mill, American gag-fest about a thirty-something couch potato drinking Bud and cracking farts; but I couldn't have been more wrong (as per usual).
It's probably not everybody's cup of horlicks, admittedly, because there's very little action and lots of talking (do you remember talking?), but it successful weaves together the life strands of several family members all searching for some way out of their dead end jobs and relationships.
And - this is the important bit - it's short: barely an hour and a half. If it had been any longer, it might have become tedious and pretensious. But the brevity of the scenes and dialogue drew attention to the core theme in a thoughtful, comic and moving way: no man is an island; we're all connected; and what we do and say has an affect upon the lives of family, friends, lovers and strangers.
A charming, little film which will make you smile.
