Review of Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1976) by Chase J — 06 Jun 2008
Wow. A slow burner like no other. Chantal Akerman's experimental feminist epic, in which we observe a Belgian widow/homemaker/prostitute go through her mundane daily routines. The result is mesmerizing and hypnotic.
Delphine Seyrig gives a brilliantly restrained performance as Jeanne and the composition of each shot is immaculate. The attention to symmetry and balance is quite Kubrickian. A demanding and rewarding work of art.
