Great masterpieces take time, and JEANNE DIELMAN, 23, QUAI DU COMMERCE, 1080 BRUXELLES uses time to weave its tale. Progressing at a liesurely pace, we are entranced by the daily routine of the title character.

Through every little movement, every little detail, we learn the character inside and out. By the evening of the second day, when her routine begins to fall apart, the tension really begins to build. The simple camera set-ups are perfect, the lack of a musical score accentuates the dramatism of the reality, and Delphine Seyrig's performance is unforgettable.

Chantal Akerman was only 25 years old when she made this film, but she shows the expertise of some of the greatest director's in cinema history. This is an unforgettable masterpice, the likes of which we could probably never see again.
