Review of Jean de Florette (1986) by Travis H — 03 Feb 2005
A powerful film about the greed of men. Daniel Auteuil continues to prove to me why he is one of the best French film actors of all time. He creates a character so complex, so real, that the audience is always watching his every move, and searching for his every thought. Something about the performance just sucked me in. Gerard Depardieu gives a very strong performance of his own. His scenes of excitement and disappointment are each of equal power. Overall, it is these two performances that carry the film, along with a strong ending (that left me dying to see the sequel, Manon des Sources).
