Review of JCVD (2008) by Elgan D — 22 Aug 2009
Even without Jean Claude, this has enough humour and excitement to make it a decent heist film. But the inclusion of the action star and the self referential script makes it something quite special. Some might say it's not as original as it thinks, and we've seen an actor playing himself many times over, but for my money this felt unique, and more importantly - it works.
Not that it's flawless. The climax to the robbery plot is dealt with messily, and the ending could have generally been better. But the film's best scenes make up for it's shortcomings. There's one particularly surreal moment that doesn't have much to do with the plot, but it's a truly affecting scene that will stick with me for a long time to come.
