Review of JCVD (2008) by Shane D — 06 Feb 2010
Surpsingly, this was an impressive and enjoyable effort. Whilst I'm not sure its the introspective career kick starter that say, "The Wrestler" was for Rourke, its easily an effort worthy of increased respect for Jean Claude.
Far from just being a window into Van Damme's life and career, it actually rollicks along at a pretty decent pace with a half decent heist storyline and finds VD in the middle of a real life heroic situation.
Its honest. Or at least appears that way on a first watch. His monologue to camera half way through the film is one of those moments where cant help but wonder, "how much of that was the real VD?".
Overall, I think the average punter would be suprised at how good this is, and for those cinephiles who might consider VD fodder, I guess this is his redemption in their eyes...for now...I see he just remade Universal Soldiers.
