Review of JCVD (2008) by Eric T — 22 May 2011
Woah! I was pleasantly surprised by this mostly-dramatic performance by Jean Claude Van Damme! "JCVD" is about the actor himself, while facing financial problems and a legal custody battle, being caught up in a tense robbery/hostage situation being executed by 3 men.
There are some darkly funny moments, some action, and a Fourth-Wall-Breaking moment where Jean Claude himself addresses the viewer directly, talking deppresingly about celebrity and stardom, and showing much more philosophy and tenderness than I've ever seen in him.
The film itself was beautifully shot (in Brussels, I suspect), and with a nice sepia tone. Although I didn't quite understand why the ending happened the way it did it, I recommend this film to all Jean Claude Van Damme fans, as a reminder that this actor is capable of a lot more than we've seen in the past.
