Review of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) by True Dirt F — 31 Mar 2010
Kevin Smith movies are amazing because of their raw/unfiltered humor, entertaining dialogue and, absence of Hollywood influences. However, Kevin Smith started becoming influenced by Hollywood as he made more movies. Unfortunately, Jay and Silent Bob was influenced by Hollywood too much. Jay and Silent Bob traveled all over the country in this movie as opposed to staying in New Jersey like they do in every other Kevin Smith movie. The scenes where they traveled through the country were very Hollywoodesque, they pretty much spelled out big budget holly wood flick. The story reeks of Hollywood, "Jay and silent bob travel to Hollywood and meet diamond thieves and steal a monkey, then run into will ferrell before being chased by cops through Hollywood studios." Now tell me it doesn't reek of Hollywood. This "Hollywood influence" would not be a problem in other films, but Kevin Smith is known for making unique independent style films that are extremely entertaining without any help from Hollywood.
If it was up to me I would have had the film take place in front of convenience stores and around NJ with a simple plot; the not too extravagant yet comical daily lives of jay and silent bob. Its too bad because these two hilarious characters deserved a better movie then jay and silent bob strike back.
