Review of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) by Jared J — 01 Jan 2012
Ha ha. Oh, Kevin Smith, you and your childish antics. What levels of depravity will you sink to to get a laugh? Now, I have a sense of humor; at least, I think I do. Compared to the average moviegoer, I don't.
Do I want to be compared to the average moviegoer? No. Is that the crowd that Smith is trying to appeal to? If so, he's succeeded. "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" is just that. It has pop culture references that most people will get, it has a lot of bad language and sexual humor, and it's funny.
All of this is to a certain extent. But is it good? No, no, no. It's stupid and nonsensical and tries to get laughs by poking fun at itself, another one of Smith's most-used maneuvers. A lot of the time it fails miserably.
Often enough, the humor gets so repetitive that it wears thin and Smith's true talent will show, and it's not a pretty sight. I didn't care for this movie one bit, and while I found it occasionally funny and sometimes smart, the charm that it had on me eventually fizzled out.
