Review of Jaws 2 (1978) by Dominik F — 23 Mar 2010

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water...Much of the suspense and awe of the first is lost in the sequel. You not only know what to expect from the shark, but when to expect it. The one bright side is that Roy Scheider returns as Amity Chief Brody, as does Lorraine Gary as his wife, Ellen. Again, Brody faces objection when trying to close the beaches menaced again by a large, rogue white shark. But the drama seems to be much less dramatic until the townfolk learn that their kids are on a series of unsafe boats in the very waters being patrolled by the killer shark. Now, the sorts of things Brody wants done suddenly don't seem too unrealistic. Naturally, some lesser characters are munched on, but again, the impact is lost from the first to the second. What's more, as fake as the shark may have looked in the original film, by this one, its shoddy nature really begins to show, as the jaws are bendy and floppy, and inside the mouth you can see the moving parts of the robot. Not as bad as the following sequels, but still quite inferior compared to the original masterpiece.
