Review of Jaws (1975) by Jacob B — 14 May 2013
Jaws is a true classic that introduced the summer blockbuster two years before Star Wars encouraged it. The performances are great, the movie is thrilling and it manages to give birth to or popularize some of the tropes that appear in many movies today like the Dolly Zoom and Nothing is Scarier.
The movie still holds up and hasn't succumbed to Seinfeld is Unfunny if only because other shark movies, including the Jaws sequels, had this movie as a tough act to follow. The shark looks fake but given the year this was released, it was understandable.
Besides, stop-motion would've probably been too tedious and would've looked much more fake than the actual mechanical shark. But I don't think it's near as bad as everyone makes him out to be despite looking unconvincing.
In the end, Jaws remains an innovative classic from Steven Spielberg.
