Review of Jawbreaker (1999) by Chetan V — 26 Aug 2009

This film started out with an interesting premise and seemed promising until it deteriorated further and further to become just another chick flick of personal revenge and expendable egos.

Fern is a poorly developed character in particular. She transforms from school outcaste to queen of the tops and down again but other than that visible transformation (too obvious to me), the viewer doesn't get the chance to really feel her changes and emotions during the film's events. We can only see her as little more than just a confused tool utilized for ulterior motives who ultimately only goes back to being someone else's tool for their own ends, regardless of whether they're morally correct or not.

Rose McGoawn does a fine job as Courtney Shane, but even she reeks of an exaggerated flair now and then.

If you look at it, in a way, its basically a failed testing draft for Mean Girls in the grand history of teen films. Thank you Tina Fey!
