Review of Jawbreaker (1999) by Steph O — 05 Oct 2010
I thought this had some potential as a Heathers for the '90s, but it didn't exactly work that way. Heathers was smart, interesting, and hilariously dark, this movie tried to be those things, but just wasn't.
The dark humor they tried to pull off just was neither dark nor funny most of the time, it just fell completely flat. The cast was good though and pulled off bitchy teenagers quite well for all being in their late '20's.
I do like the whole jawbreaker idea and it starts off pretty good with that scene, but it just goes consistently downhill and becomes quite lackluster and then they try to have a big redeeming ending to make everything fine and dandy, but that too just falls flat and is extremely cliche.
It's not a terrible watch, if you completely turn off your brain, but I suggest Heathers for a similar, but much better, movie.
