Review of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993) by Cory M — 24 Feb 2010
Recently watched this film again, this time with the director and screenwriter commentary, which helped give some insight on what they were going for with this strange entry into the Friday the 13th series. And I really do mean strange. This is the one where Jason's evil spirit leaves his body and hops to other bodies attempting to be reborn.
It starts out crazy, with the FBI blowing Jason to pieces. Where do you go from there? Really, it seemed like the filmmakers were unsure how to answer that question. However, what follows is some of the most violent and sexual stuff that has come across a Friday the 13th film. But hey, it's fun, and I applaud the filmmakers for trying something new, instead of having Jason stomp around Crystal Lake again. I'll cut the film some more slack, it was directed by a 23 year-old fresh out of film school. To jump into a major franchise like this, that young, and pull off a decent revamp of Jason Voorhees, that's a pretty cool thing.
*Keep in mind this rating is on somewhat of a curve, I base it on other Friday the 13th films, and not film as a whole.
