Review of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993) by Archibald T — 18 Nov 2011
Heading back to Camp Crystal Lake should be the last thing on one young woman's mind, but she goes anyway to fix a light bulb, strip and take a bath. Suddenly her bath is interrupted by a power outage and an machete wielding psychopath in a hockey mask known as Jason Voorhees.
The young woman turned out to be bait for a SWAT team. They needed him out in the open so they could shoot and blow him up. It's a success with a flaw: Jason's heart stops beating momentarily until at the morgue where it begins to beat again.
A man examining the heart becomes possessed (or forced) to eat it once it starts beating again. He devours the heart to gain the power of Voorhees himself. With this power comes a great killing ability. Now Jason has returned in a more body snatchers type of fashion. The only one who appears to stop him is a man named Creighton Duke, a black version of Quint from 'Jaws'.
According to Duke, the only way Jason can return to hell is if one of his relatives stab him in the chest with a special dagger. Sounds easy enough, but when those that are possessed by him aren't wearing his trade mark hockey mask it can get very confusing.
For the characters that are stuck in this body snatcher situation could only be the most positive thing for them. Seeing Jason in all his grotesque glory would easily sending them running for the hills. That is unless he possesses one of his dead relatives than you might as well prepare for a quick death as he can only return to human form through this act alone.
The daughter of a Voorhees, Jessica, is going to have to be stuck with the burden of taking care of this matter. Well, her, Steven with the glasses and Duke. Hooray!
The early ninties called for the end of our usual eighties slasher figures. It would begin with Krueger in Freddy's Dead before we would get a "farewell" from good ol' Jason here. Such crap. EVIL NEVER DIES! or so they say.
This "final friday" has an interesting set-up with Jason supernaturally jumping from one body to the next. It's not interesting, however, to see other people doing Jason's deeds without that damn hockey mask! It's a joke that we have to endure a load of crap until we FINALLY see him in the last half of the film. It's worth it to stay put until then, but that doesn't mean much either way.
Overall, a very disappointing "end".
