Review of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993) by Kilo D — 19 Oct 2012
The first ten minutes of "Jason Goes to Hell" are a testament to what this movie franchise is best at offering, albeit offering it in a more polished way. The scene has it 'all' as far as this series goes: atmosphere, the setting, sexy-shower sequence, sound of the infamous echo, a chase through the woods, Jason's mask looks cool, and there's bloodshed (with an interruption of some explosives, which is not the norm) and body parts in various locations by scene's end. Then "Jason Goes to Hell" goes to the discount bin. To paraphrase Woody Allen in regards to the movie it should be known that it, "has a certain something that trumps logic, but proceed into the propeller," if one wants to brave it out further on down a long, incoherent narrative that somehow allows Jason to essentially shape-shift into other flesh-and-blood humans. Well, one can hope they are human, as the the lack of the slightest hints of character development hinder an already weak script inept. And it's no help that some characters were added with superfluous motive to be murdered. On the plus, there's more gore in "Jason Goes to Hell" than in a slaughterhouse as if to make up for its nonsensical existence as celluloid.
When I saw "Jason Goes to Hell" in theatres I knew it wasn't going to be the last, so I had hope there would be a better, future sequel a few years later. But we received "Jason X" unarguably too soon. For the little it's worth the detailed and grotesque special effects in "Jason Goes to Hell" are a blast, and as far the movie goes, it has a few notable scenes that stand out and can be safely added to the franchise's collage, beside that it's for fans of the series only and for those fans this movie is still a stinker. But just when one thinks things couldn't get worse . . .
