Review of Jason Bourne (2016) by Stuart J — 02 Sep 2016
This is getting mixed reviews but for me this is classic Bourne. I guess the thing that detracts from this is the fact the original story has already been told. A lot of the intrigue of the original trilogy was firmly rooted in going on a journey of discovery with Jason. That's what was the driving force of the story. We wanted to find out what Treadstone was all about just as much as he did. Therefore, the premise of this new movie as a means of bringing the character back on screen felt a bit contrived.
But once you get over that fact and settle into it, it's typical Bourne. The gritty, decrepit, urban European settings, the shaky cam fights, the car chases, the one-step-ahead twists that Bourne springs on his enemies (and us).
And the set pieces are epic by the way. The Athens one in particular. Admittedly the Las Vegas chase was unconvincing. That SWAT vehicle must be some kind of Transformer, the way it can throw 20 cars up in the air like balloons. I was also a bit gutted at a main character dying quite early on.
Buy anyway yeah, it has its faults but it's still fun. 'Oh baby, oh baby, then it fell apart...'.
