Review of Jason Bourne (2016) by Don S — 27 Jan 2017
To begin, I did indeed like this film. It has all the great action of the Bourne flicks - great fight scenes and fantastic car/vehicle chases! Also, they continue with my favorite word for killer in the movies - "asset"! And I think Tommy Lee Jones is the best governmental villain yet! I also found this to be the first Bourne film that I understood after only one watch! Which leads me to the negative. And that is, after 3 films of fairly complicated/intertwined plots, this one just sort of made up a past "problem" for Jason to "come out of hiding". So, they made up a new bad guy that did a bad thing in his past and even though everything was settled after "Ultimatum", Bourne gets mad, wants revenge, and becomes "active" again. Pretty weak. So, essentially, this film doesn't really "go" with the first three, it's almost a stand alone. Which is good and bad. Good if you just want to watch this one, bad if you, like me, were hoping for a continuation of the character and Treadstone/Blackbriar plot. I also think that dropping the Pam Landy character, or even a mention of her, was a mistake.
Still, if you take it for what it is, and not what it could have been, it's a pretty good, and intense, action thriller!
