Review of Jason Bourne (2016) by Trevor K — 13 Aug 2016
A relentless pounding of the series' consistent themes--CIA intrigue, sabotage, and violations of the constitution and international covenants. Efforts are made to personalize Bourne's struggles while deepening his involvement with those who made him in the first place, simultaneously touching on the expansion of what Bourne as a series, and Bourne as a character, could become.
If there is any weakness, it is the trope of Bourne still discovering parts of his past that lend new revelations. If they could let the character, finally, have his full memory, and as a consequence let his self-discovery expand his physical reach, the next film could be a masterpiece.
Greengrass brings his trademark style, Damon is as charismatic as ever, and the action is frenetic and merciless. The final car chase is among the most memorable I can recall, not merely in the franchise, but in cinematic history. Bourne is as formidable as ever.
