Review of Jason Bourne (2016) by David T — 09 Jul 2017
Disappointing on several accounts.
The plot, or lack of one. It's pretty obvious why Bourne wants the stolen info far too soon into the movie, and the pay-off of all that towards the end is very disappointing. We never really find out why the CIA agent Heather has a grudge against director Dewey.
The action. The first film (Bourne Identity) had the most exciting fight sequences. These here are more brutal, but also more disappointing.
The characters. Director Dewey is extremely one-dimensional. We don't know the underlying motive for Heather. Agent Jeffers seems like an afterthought. The bad guy (the Asset) is one-dimensional, boiled down to a single motive of revenge at all costs. And most disappointing of all, Nicki gets killed.
Rule: Never kill the girl from the previous film. Far too many films do this, as an easy out for the writers to ignore a major character from a previous film. Bourne Supremacy did this in the first five minutes. This one took longer, but still broke the rule.
