Mendes. leaving an impression? right, yes, undeniable. the performances great. it starts straight in boot camp before Desert Storm which was two decades ago. the movie is a period piece. Mendes set out not to make a Vietnam movie, even playing on the Doors song having Gyllenhaal break walls saying "that's a fucking Vietnam song, can't we get our own shit?" after which NWA or something early 90's plays.
an interesting choice. I laughed. More than anything the movie instills a deep sense of camaraderie that is caused when you live, shit, jack-off, sleep, and die with a group of men for years straight.
inevitably, as the ending so viciously told us, once in the desert that feeling never leaves an individual. it may not be realistic but its a great attempt at re-creating the life of a young marine in the 1990's.
I liked it.
