Essential Viewing: No.
Anyone esle see this and felt like they were watching a lesser version of Full Metal Jacket? I know I did. Sam Mendes once again is in top flight directing mode. Shocker, huh? Gyllenhaal gives a respectable performance although Jamie Foxx manages to upstage him in every scene the two share. The script was tight and kept me solidly entertained but there were obvious points in the film where you just weren't getting the same energy level as in other sections. A very special mention must be made of Peter Sarsgaard's performance. Does anyone else just admire the way this actor goes about being brilliant in just about any film he is in? Don't worry, he does it here too. Overall, good flick, just came off a bit like a "my war" Full Metal Jacket.
