Mendes' anti-war adaptation may not have the raw power of, say, the 'Nam movies but it does have a level of guts that goes beyond many if not all modern war movies, it isn't afraid to show what war can really be most of the time - sheer boredom punctuated by fleeting moments of sheer horror, disgust, anguish and fear.
It makes the refreshing statement that war is hell, but so much of the damage is left in your mind.
